I remember when I was a new mom, the world nearly stopped when my baby got sick for the first time. Sure enough the weather turned, and soon enough we were in the thick of cold and flu season. He was right under a year and when I picked him up I could just feel the heat radiating from him. There is something so helpless not knowing if it is just a little bug or something super serious and there isn’t much you can do! The one thing I could do was take his temperature. That way I knew whether I was over reacting, you know… being that mom, or there really was something to worry about. I am so glad I had an accurate thermometer on hand because once I took it, I knew immediately with it nearing 104˚ I needed to call the doctor right away.

We had a long night of urgent care but in the end he was okay and that is all that matters! 6 years later we have had our share of fevers. My daughter battled a virus that landed us in the hospital for 3 days and my little one seems to pick up every little thing the other two bring home from school and activities.

Studies show that I am not alone, as a matter of fact, three out of four moms, regardless of age, list pediatric fever as their number one concern. Fevers are just so scary. When my daughter had a high fever, our doctor kept in touch with me daily having me monitor her fever with an accurate thermometer to monitor the situation. We both felt confident that as long as we knew what her temperature was, we could make the right decisions for her care. Since her fever didn’t go down, we ended up going for treatment in the hospital, but the fact that I was able to know exactly where she was at and how she was doing each moment and share that with my doctor was priceless. I know that she got exactly what she needed to get better when she needed it.

Having an accurate thermometer is just about what saves my sanity anytime my kids get sick. With just a degree making so much difference, it is pretty important that you know it is on point. When my youngest was a baby, just 5 years ago, I had to try to wrangle him still enough to get a read under his armpit, and if I couldn’t well then it was you know where…. To EVERY mother’s delight technology has come so far in these past few years and now you can get some of the most accurate temperature reading with just a touch of the forehead or ear!

We have had many models of thermometer, but this is hands down my favorite. No more swiping! Braun No touch + forehead thermometer offers Braun’s fastest, most comfortable clinically accurate temperature reading. What is really cool is that Braun technology captures twice as much body heat compared to traditional forehead products. With the confidence of Braun technology, parents can get the same professional accuracy whether gently touching their child’s forehead or from up to two inches away which is especially helpful if your child is sleeping or extra uncomfortable. While gearing up for the winter season, be sure to get these Braun thermometers and all of yourWinter wellness needsatAmazon here.

This is the first time I have used an ear thermometer, and I really liked it! The Braun ThermoScan® Ear thermometer is the number one brand among pediatricians and moms. What I didn’t know, but love about this one is that the ear canal is the best site to measure a fever because of its close proximity to the eardrum, which shares the blood supply of the brain’s temperature control center. It is also available nationally at most Mass, Drug andon Amazon here.

Best Homemade Chicken Noodle Soup Recipe

We could talk about cold and flu season without talking about chicken noodle soup. It seems that no matter how sick my kids are, they always want to eat. That can be tricky at times since you don’t want to make them feel worse, so I like to stick to tried and true dishes that are easy on sick tummies like chicken noodle soup.

Ihave a little bit of an obsession with trying out new recipes, combining them with old recipes, and tweaking it all until I finally concoct the one that is SO GOOD that I never need another recipe for that dish again. Well, let me tell you, Homemade Chicken Noodle Soup is D-O-N-E. This recipe is the only one you will ever need. It is so flavorful. It is packed with veggies, noodles, and rich chicken flavor. The best part is that for something so flavor packed, it is so simple to make! I also know it is the best, because I took a special batch over to one of my toughest critics and two bowls and only about 5 minutes later I got the stamp of approval and told to label this one the WORLD’S BEST. So there you go!

The secret ingredient is really the rotisserie chicken for a few reasons. First, I really love the flavor and texture of rotisserie chicken. Using it in place of plain chicken breast already adds to the flavor, but to make it over the top, you start the soup by simmering the whole chicken in the broth. You take the entire chicken, bones and all, and put it right in your pot. This is also how you make chicken broth and why it has so much amazing flavor, so starting the soup off like this gives it a base of incredible flavor.

The other thing that makes this soup a little extra special is the addition of cornstarch. Many of the chicken soup recipes I have tried or created over the years does not have this. The cornstarch helps to bring everything together and makes the broth of the soup just a touch thicker. I think this is great especially when you are sick because it gives your stomach something to hold on to. Sometimes when things are too watery it make me feel a bit nauseous, but when there is a bit more texture and weight it can actually feel a lot more settled on an empty stomach.

Ingredients

  • 1 Rotisserie Chicken prepared
  • 2 cups chopped celery
  • 2 cups chopped carrots
  • 1 large yellow onion chopped
  • 4 Tbsp Butter
  • 1 tsp poultry seasoning
  • 96 oz chicken broth
  • 12 oz 1 package wide egg noodles
  • 1/3 cup corn starch
  • 1/4 cup water

Instructions

  • Place the carrots, celery, onions, butter, and poultry seasoning in a large stock pot on medium high heat and sauté until the vegetables are tender, about 5-10 minutes.

  • Place the entire chicken on top of the vegetables and then pour the broth over the top. Bring the pot to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer for 30 minutes.

  • While the soup simmers, mix the cornstarch and water until the cornstarch is completely dissolved. Then at the end of the 30 minutes, remove the chicken from the soup and pour the cornstarch mixture into the broth slowly while continuously stirring. Once it is all combined, stir in the noodles and let them cook 6-8 minutes or until just tender.

  • While the noodles are cooking, remove the chicken meat from the bones and chop it into bite sized pieces. When the noodles are tender, stir the chicken in and mix well.

  • Serve hot and enjoy!
