Is it legal to sell puppies in NJ? ›

The current law requires stores to obtain animals through breeders who are in good standing and licensed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Breeders who don't hold proper state and federal licenses or who violate certain animal welfare laws are barred from selling animals in New Jersey.

Financial factor. Pets are often abandoned because their owner can no longer afford to take care of them. Many pet owners are not aware of how much it costs to take care of a pet over their entire life.

Get help from shelters and rescue groups.

As a last resort, you may be able to surrender your pet to a local shelter or rescue organization. Each agency will have a different process for surrendering a pet to their care; learn more by visiting their website or by calling ahead.

Cats generally like being stroked along their back, around their cheeks and the base of their ears, and under their chin. For dogs, the spot where the tail joins their upper back is a particularly good spot for a scratch. They also like under-chin tickles and rubs on the back of their neck near their collar.

Adoptable animals are generally held and placed with a new family; animals that are too sick, old, or unsociable to be adopted are euthanized. Once a shelter gains title to the animal, it can do with the animal as it sees fit, and its decision will be upheld by courts as long as the shelter complied with state law.

As your puppy gets older gradually increase the total amount of time you leave them alone. Adult dogs are generally okay on their own for 4-6 hours a day. But, many dogs are good at adapting to being alone for 8-9 hours while you are at work if they are provided with enough space to comfortably move around.

Contact your local animal shelter

Many animal shelters, rescues, SPCAs, humane societies, and municipal animal controls have programs to keep people and pets together. At minimum they can often refer you to credible resources in your own community that may be able to help.

The ideal time. The exact time that is best for a puppy to go to its new home can vary by situation, but most breeders and veterinarians agree that 8 weeks of age is a good minimum. Some states have laws in place preventing puppies from being sold any earlier.
